In the produce room, you can rest assured that you are ‘eating local’ – fresh and organic – while in the large cool room, eggs, organic meats, yogurts and cheeses are the finest Conifer Hill can find. Leura CellarsAddress: 169-171 The Mall At first glance, Cellars may seem like a typical liquor store on typical Main Street Australia. But after a few minutes of browsing, wine lovers will recognise the clear distinction between typical and superb. Situated in the main street of historic Leura, Cellars first opened in 1946 and has evolved into an iconic liquor store among the top ten liquor stores of the year in NSW every year since 1996. Wine lovers alert, the Cellars is a must see on your trip to Leura. Leura DeliAddress: Shop 4, The Mall You’re certain this is London! Perhaps you’ve arrived in New York’s Chelsea district? Or, Sydney’s Newtown. Tucked away in the Leura Arcade is a most enticing deli – the kind you rarely find outside these major cities. Choices are incredible and oh, so edible – Italian antipasti, pâtés, imported cheese, smoked salmon and aged meats – the makings of a perfect picnic or a fantastic meal in a Leura holiday cottage. Like rows of uniformed toy soldiers, bottles of pastilles, mustard, pesto and jams stand at attention. Producing a colourful array, Yarra Valley oils and Italian vinegars line the shelves side by side and will impress even the most jaded connoisseur. The variety that proprietors Julie and Peter Galea offer is remarkable. One last item: ask Julie about the innovative “packaged frozen margaritas or daiquiris” – certainly a conversation piece for any outdoor occasion. Leura Health FoodsAddress: 155 The Mall Well stocked, the health food store must have every need covered and the helpful staff will advise you for your health concerns and, in general, for better living. Leura Village ButcheryAddress: 176 The Mall Clean as a whistle, this sparkling butchery is for lovers of quality meats. If you are renting a self-contained with a great kitchen, you should include this Leura shop in your menu planning. The in-house butcher brags about the sausages made on his premises, and we must agree, they are plump, and in various savory flavourss. We think this butchery can compete with the best of them in Sydney. GalleriesAntiques for all Times Address: 132 The Mall If you are a collector, collectibles here will delight you. Antique furniture and accessories are lovely, but the collection of Christmas decorations will surprise even the most sophisticated. Open Thurs through Monday, the gallery also stocks prints and beautiful greeting cards. Call for details and hours. Gallery Lane Address: 87 Railway Parade There are two entrances to this charming gallery. Our favourite is down
the footpath only a few metres past the Post Office Restaurant, and the
Michael White Gallery. This medium-sized gallery is the showplace of their paintings in mixed media and watercolours. Leonie’s love of cats and old buildings — the cornerstones of our lives — and Lorraine’s images bubbling up from the inner landscapes of dreams and childhood make for a delightful contrast. Ask to see the Board Room! Note: The Gallery is open only Friday through Monday. Leura Fine Woodwork GalleryAddress: 130 The Mall Creations range from items beautifully designed for everyday use to exquisitely turned bowls through to sculptures that speak their very own language of style, elegance and motion, providing the owner with a conversation piece, enjoyment and heirloom. This is an amazing showcase of art from the finest craftspeople around Australia. Seeger GalleryAddress: 175 A (UPSTAIRS) The Mall On your visit to Leura you must visit Seeger’s boutique-style gallery in the heart of The Mall. Climb the steps at 175A where you enter an eclectic world of contemporary art and design. The intimate space with its high ceilings and decorative artefacts of a 19th century building is inviting and warm, and featured works are displayed with feeling and drama. Gallery owners Sophie and Gary Seeger have captured the significance of each artist. Some works are bold, capturing in black and white oils the wild and exciting expression of sea and shore. Another explores charming Blue Mountains narratives. Distinct and unpredictable Indigenous art, mysterious and moody landscapes, mixed-media pastels – all confirm the breadth and distinctive style of artists featured by Seeger Gallery. Included in their featured works are ceramics and glass art which will enhance your prized collection. Gallery owners Sophie and Gary Seeger envision a much broader concept than the oft traditional gallery. Their goal is to connect fresh talent and art with those who wish to start or grow a collection. They have created a space and state of mind where personal reflection through art is de rigueur.
Michael White Art GalleryAddress: Shop 5,148 The Mall The Michael White gallery is located behind the Post Office Restaurant and next to the post office. It contains a substantial and striking exhibition of White’s original oils, many painted on the finest Belgian linen. The contemporary gallery is large, so there is plenty of room to step back and take in the full effect of his technique and his varied choice of colours. White captures many scenes, some in muted tones reflecting a brilliant moon shimmering over a calm ocean or a bold escarpment sunset in stunning vivid colours. In 2006, he focussed upon the American Southwest – remote butte mountains or snow-capped peaks in the far distance of a Colorado landscape. He seized upon and conveyed strikingly the massive size of America’s New Mexico, Colorado and Arizona in these recent works, some wall size, others framed miniature scenes. His most recent works are of northern New South Wales and Queensland — vibrant, almost shimmering eucalypt groves at sunset or at sunrise. On his website, you will find examples of his newest works as this artist is a constant and prolific one. In all, the theme of nature echoes throughout Michael White’s work. Gifts & PharmaciesBundles of LeuraAddress: Shop 7 Strand Arcade, 178 The Mall (off the
carpark) Gifts, gifts, gifts displayed to make shopping for family back home an effortless task. Take notice of the pub plaque reproductions high on a wall. They may not be one of a kind, but where else will you find them? Body & Being & Sanctuary Day SpaAddress: 173a The Mall Customised natural products for your skin and body are a specialty in this second storey spa. Don’t hesitate to come up the steps as products are on display in the reception area and the receptionist can answer questions you may have. Calm and serene is the mood at Body & Being. Bygone Beautys Address: 20-22 Grose Street Bygone Beautys is a most popular attraction for visitors to Leura with its “Treasured Teapot Collection.” Some 3,000 make it the world’s largest private collection. And while that will certainly be something to write home about, it is but one claim. ‘Beautys’ is also the largest emporium of antiques, estate/new jewellery, collectables, giftware. Christmas CottageAddress: 185 The Mall This wee little shop on The Mall looks and feels like Santa’s closet, and when the weather turns chilly, you may have to wait your turn to walk into the shop where lights twinkle, a scent of cinnamon and cranberry wafts by, and hundreds of ornaments, whimsical or traditional, adorn every nook and cranny. Christmas is a time we never forget and an Australian craftsman — the definitive Santa’s helper—designs and creates the Australiana ornaments for that special holiday touch, albeit it tree, basket or gumnut wreath. If you can’t find the ornament or decoration you want here, it probably doesn’t exist. Clothing, soaps, rugs and interesting children’s toys, such as the Russ Bears, line the shelves. Of course, band-aids and cold medications are stocked and if one of life’s minor emergency occurs, you are certain to find what you need.
