In the Leura Bushwalks, we are taking you on three easy bushwalks that go beyond the shopping area of Leura. While not vigorous, these bushwalks take you out of the village centre and into nature’s bounty. Along the escarpment and down to the lookouts you will discover Leura in its relationship to the Blue Mountains and the World Heritage designation that preserves it. Each short bushwalk to a lookout will get you up close and personal with the natural beauty that prompted Leura’s attraction to visitors.

leura bushwalks - General Information

If you are travelling by foot, transportation around the World Heritage Site is available from Leura Village to the any of the three Leura lookouts. Two bus companies, Blue Mountains Explorer Bus and Trolley Shoppe Tours, offer a “Hop On, Hop Off” fee-based pass. In Leura, the pick-up location is at the corner of Megalong and Grose streets. Each stop has clearly marked signage, usually on a nearby utility pole.

Both sightseeing bus companies have a fixed schedule morning and afternoon. The first trip begins at 9:15 a.m. The full Leura/Katoomba circuit takes one hour, so you could plan your walk to coincide with a pick-up schedule. Travellers hop on and off at various marked locations, and rarely is the bus filled for the entire circuit. Drivers are knowledgeable about the bushwalks, offering such tidbits as “from the escarpment to the valley floor is 250 feet”. They are accommodating and extend helpful and useful suggestions to bushwalkers.

Buses climb hilly terrain, bouncing along over uneven streets and providing quick glances at the amazing sandstone cliffs. Laughter and chatter among your fellow passengers echo the global composition of visitors to the Blue Mountains. Clearly, the ride along the escarpment is exciting for everyone.

bushwalking Tour Map, Side Two

The Bushwalking Tour Map is a not-to-scale representation of the area. The bushwalks to each of the escarpment lookouts are indicated on the map. They are numbered sequentially.

Each bushwalk is timed and rated for level of difficulty. One, the Sublime Point Lookout bushwalk, requires transportation to the site of the bushwalk. The bushwalks are safe for children aged 9 and older. They are not advised for small children.

Leura Blue Mountains Bushwalk

The short bushwalks we suggest here are located on the Leura side of the Prince Henry Cliff Walk, and we point out a few interesting facts along the way. Each bushwalk has a destination point, an impressive lookout over Jamison Valley and the stunning and rugged wilderness below. If you wish to take a longer bushwalk along the Prince Henry Cliff Walk, we recommend a series of Walking Track Guides, written and published by the Blue Mountains National Park. These monographs can be purchased at Megalong Books in Leura and at Echo Point Lookout and Information Centre on Echo Point Road, Katoomba. Each covers a selection of short or long bushwalks with detailed maps of the area, describing.
